From collection Timeline
The Vietnam War and the official involvement of the United States began in 1954. It was a conflict between North Vietnam - supported by the Soviet Union, China, and several other communist allies, and South Vietnam - supported by the United States, South Korea and other anti-communist allies. Lasting more than fifteen years, the conflict took more than 3 million lives; over 58,000 Americans were killed and more than half of the dead were Vietnamese civilians.
