Beyond the Boxer: Ali and the Humanitarian Within

What comes to mind when you hear the name Muhammad Ali?

Boxer?

The Greatest of All Time?

Legend?

While most of the world remembers Ali as a boxer, the Muhammad Ali Center considers one of Ali's most lasting legacies to be his work as a humanitarian.

Beyond the Boxer: Ali and the Humanitarian Within features a curated selection of some of Muhammad Ali's humanitarian efforts from 1954 to 2016. It does not include all of Ali's humanitarian or philanthropic efforts. In fact, we may never know the full extent of Ali's good deeds. Though nicknamed the 'Louisville Lip' and known for his bragadocious attitude and melodic speech, Muhammad did not advertise his philanthropic efforts. He did it without need for recognition, commendation, or praise. He did it without any expectation of acknowledgement because it was the right and kind thing to do. There is no comprehensive list of his humanitarian services as many of them were provided in silence.

One of Ali's most well known quotes is, "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth." It is a saying that he embodied throughout his life and career. In November, the Muhammad Ali Center is hosting its 8th annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards. These awards celebrate individuals who, like Muhammad Ali, strive to make a difference in their communities and the world, and who exemplify his courageous fight for social justice, peace, and positive change.
