In December 1974 Muhammad Ali, during a visit to New York City, New York for the city's Muhammad Ali Day celebrations, spoke at Riker's Island Correctional Facility to approximately 800 young offenders. He said during his speech, "You couldn't give me $10 million to spend a year in jail. Life is too short to be in a place like this. If you get time, do the time and say, 'Man, I got a hell of a lesson. I'll never come in here any more.'"
