Near the end of the opening ceremony, after the entrance of the Olympic flag, a proclamation from the Italian President, and the singing of the Olympic anthem, the torch was carried into the stadium. It was carried by Giancarlo Peris, an Italian track athlete of Greek descent, the last torchbearer of 1,529. The torch journeyed through Greece and Italy, and across the Ionian Sea, to emphasize and highlight the history and correlation between the ancient and modern Olympic games.
