On November 21, 2005 the Muhammad Ali Museum and Education Center, fondly referred to as the Muhammad Ali Center, officially opened to the public. Founded by Muhammad and Lonnie Ali, the Center was intended to inspire visitors to find their greatness and be the greatest they can be.
The local Newspaper, the Courier-Journal, ran an advertisement that stated, "The Muhammad Ali Center is an international education and cultural center that is guided and inspired by the ideals of Muhammad Ali. Through a captivating and immersive "visitor experience," global outreach, educational initiatives and key partnerships, the Center will carry on Muhammad's legacy and continue his life's work. The Ali Center is a place that inspires exploration of greatness within ourselves."
