For the Children of Louisville

On October 29, 1960, Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay Jr.) fought as professional boxer for the first time, winning by unanimous decision against Tunney Hunsaker. This was not only his first victory as a professional, it was also his first fight with a charitable cause in mind. All proceeds from this match were donated to the Kosair Children’s Hospital of Louisville.

Six years later, after becoming Heavyweight Champion of the World, converting to Islam, and changing his name, Muhammad Ali returned to Louisville to help the hospital once again. The night of October 27, 1966, Ali fought Doug Jones in a six-round exhibition match for the benefit of the Children’s Hospital Foundation. Prior to the fight, the champion visited the hospital and interacted with as many children as possible, fielding questions about his new name, how many fights he had won, and when he would fight again.
